Do students take tests online or do they have to go someplace? If tests are given by mentors, they are taken online safely and securely within our learning system. Can a student begin any time? Yes. Orion is a year-round school, with start dates "any day, any time". Students may begin whenever they want and choose their own school calendar. Our learning system operates 24 hours a day - every day of the year. My child has special needs, will this school help? Our mentor teachers offer flexibility and allows our students to learn and work according to their own abilities and interests. What if we decide that this school is not right for us, can we withdraw? Yes. If you find that this school is not a good fit for you, you may withdraw any time. Refunds are given if you withdraw within the first ten days of the month. Do I need to be approved from my school district before I enroll with your school? No. All incoming students are 100% approved to attend our school and take advantage of all of our programs. Orion is a stand-alone, fully accredited school - and is not a home school, so students must completely withdraw from their previous school before coming to us - UNLESS you are taking courses at Orion, as PART of your traditional-public school day. If we enroll now, do we have to start immediately or can we start at a later date? When you enroll, you may choose the date you wish to begin. We plan to travel, will we be penalized for missing school? No. Just send us a note to let us know you'll be away and we'll let your instructors know. You are free to travel all you want. This is one of the many benefits of a virtual school - flexbility! What about attendance? My child has good days and bad days. Can we work on the good days and skip the bad? Yes. Our learning system is customized for you. Our students have different backgrounds, abilities, challenges, careers, and interests and they all have a different schedule. Our students work at their own pace - not somebody else's. We are from out state, can we still enroll? Absolutely! We have students all over the U.S. and from around the world. How does the online school work? Students log into their classes from a computer with an Internet connection. We have one main platform so students do not need to be navigating the Internet freely. They simply log into school and begin class. Once logged in, students will find each of their subjects listed. Students choose the subject they wish to begin with and start the lesson. Lessons include text, video, activity, and exercises. Once completed, scores are automatically logged and students move on to the next subject. Do I need a new computer to do the virtual school? Most family computers with an Internet connection will work fine with our program. Do I need more than one computer for each of my children to use? It is common for students to share the same computer to access the online school. To do this, students will need to schedule their time, as only one student may be logged in at a time while sharing a computer. Is there anything else I need to purchase? No. All material is provided within the learning system.* *Students taking certain courses related to software such as Photoshop, will need to acquire a copy of the software. However, free trial versions are available from most companies. What if we need help? The mentor/teacher is the first line of communication for the class or classes. We also have tech support are available to all students. How will I know my child is working and doing well? Parents can view their child's progress by logging into the system and viewing the student's records. These records include grades, login times and more. Can a student transfer mid-year? Yes. Can a student complete work while traveling? Absolutely! Students can download their course work and assignments via the Internet from anywhere and at any time. How many hours per day do I need to study? An average student may expect to spend four hours per day. What kind of assessments are used to measure academic progress? Assessments are built into the courseware. Mastery levels are set at 70% and students are not allowed to progress to the next level until those levels are achieved. We also uses a sophisticated series of criterion-referenced assessments for student placement and benchmarking progress. What academic standards must students achieve? Student success is measured by demonstrating competence at 70% or better in each subject at every level. Each student determines his/her own pace and learning style but mastery of each lesson is required to progress. What happens when a student does not meet these standards? We will refer those having difficulty to resources available to provide assistance. What constitutes an academic year? An academic year is the completion of the core courses for elementary and middle school, and six credits at high school at 877-647-1337
